Maundy Thursday |
| "Maundy" comes from the French word, "Mande,"
which meaning "command" or "mandate." Maundy Thursday is the day on which Jesus
instituted of the Last Supper. It is the beginning of Holy Communion. You can
read about the Lord's Supper in
Luke 22:7-38 |
| Also on Thursday evening before Jesus'
death, Jesus and his disciples were celebrating the Jewish feast of Passover.
Passover was celebrated to remember the time when God saved his people, the Israelites,
when they were enslaved in Egypt. The account of the Passover is found in
Exodus 12:1-20. On this Thursday, Jesus aslo washed the disciples' feet and
identified Judas the one who would betrayed Him. |
Here at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, we
invite you to Maundy Thursday Services. Holy Communion is served. The Lord's
Table is open to all who profess Jesus as Lord.
"And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and
gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."
In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant
in my blood, which is poured out for you." Luke 22:19-20 NIV
At the conclusion of the worship, the altar is stripped
of all decorations as we prepare our hearts for Good Friday and
for the joy of Easter morning. |
